Ginger Leadership Communications is a global, award-winning leadership communications company. For more than a decade, we’ve been successfully developing authentic and influential leaders across the globe.

The problem

Ginger’s existing website was on a proprietary platform and they felt that by migration to WordPress, they’d be able to expand on the content and the SEO benefits.

Some of the disadvantages of their existing platform was that images were not resized or optimised – which comes as default with WordPress.

Many of the features they wanted to expand on, they’d need a Developer to know the existing platform and rewrite code, which wasn’t cost-effective.

The solution

We planned to migrate the website to WordPress, which would enable more flexible control over content, the ability to add functionality through plugins and have improved Technical SEO and Content.

We planned out the entire website, creating a new visual site map and also created captures of all the page designs to identify reusable components prior to build.

We analysed the URL structures to ensure we retained these during the migration.

One of the challenges is WordPress has it’s own way of creating permalinks, so one solution was to create multiple Custom Post Types.

This helped retain the url structure, but also offered better organisation of content with Categories and Tags.

An added benefit we created custom Blocks we built to pick and choose what content displays in locations such as the Homepage template.

They were also very responsive whenever there was an urgent issue that needed addressing.

in their own words…

I am a director at a leadership communications company. We deliver b-2-b leadership comms training to large corporates.

Our website was developed on a propriety CMS and we were dependent on the developer on any content changes which created a bottleneck. This started impeding on our business’s ability to adapt and respond to the needs of our potential and existing clients.

We searched on-line for a UK based WP developer. We shortlisted 5 companies, interviewed 3 and settled on us.

The scope of the project was to recreate the content of our existing website like for like in the WP environment. The key deliverables were creation of WP page templates for all types of pages on our existing website, migration of the content to WP, host transfer with preservation of the existing SEO rankings.

We worked with the project manager and a developer.

We were surprised how quickly we managed to migrate the content of the site into the WP environment. Our expectations were exceeded by the fact, they not only created the templates for all the page types but actually copied and populated the new site completely at a very good value – this was initially not in the scope of the project. The one unforeseen downfall of the migration process was the drop of the rankings that resulted from how the new URLS were generated. This is now being fixed and they were helpful in getting this right.

We used Asana for project management. They differentiated all the tasks required for migration to to be successful and updated it regularly. We also had occasional progress update calls with the team.

The depth and breath of their technical knowledge and an ability to understand our needs well. They were also very responsive whenever there was an urgent issue that needed addressing.

Were there any areas for improvement or something they could have done differently?

There was something that could be improved in terms of responsiveness as occasionally it took a while to be responded to. Also, the drop on the SEO rankings was a bit of a blow and I would expect this to be predicted and avoided.
